Lately I found a very interesting quote on Facebook saying: “The best for your body is a quiet mind”. It sounds great, and many Facebook users liked it. Me too.
But how to get that quietness of the mind we are all longing for?
Of course, there is a bit more to it as a quote can say …
We usually think our mind is in utter control instructing our body what to do. Yes, our individual mind setup has a strong impact on physical and emotional processes in the whole organism. But the #body-#mind connection is not a one-way street, - a fact that many of us tend to forget. There is a lot of scientific research going on highlighting that the interplay between body and mind goes two ways. How we use our body, how we treat and nurture our body – actually ourselves, shapes also our mind.
Taking an even closer look at the matter, there is no division between body and mind. It’ all about neuronal information which is mixed in the brain. The intertwinement of bodily and mental information is organised in the individual central nervous system. Any division is actually caused by the fact that expressions of the system (thoughts, pain, emotions, tensions, sensations) are located in two different areas: in the head and in the rest of the body. So, the division of body and mind is related to their areas of expression but the one-ness of the system is based on human physiology.
Going beyond theory, for any practical use, I ask my clients three things to pay attention to:
*** Treat your “bodymind” as a fluid system, as ONE. How you treat your body will shape your mind. How you think and decide is instantly effecting your body.
*** Avoid giving your nervous system double-bind messages. If you want to quieten your mind by using meditation, awareness methods or mental training for instance, never forget your body.
o In practise: I see many meditators trying to get their minds under control by disciplining the body. That is a contradiction in terms. The mind as such cannot be completely controlled, and the body cannot be completely controlled either. In fact, the body has to be freed. A happy, fluently working and relaxed body is the foundation to experience a quietly working mind.
*** It’s all about balance. A life in balance requires both. Being active / being quiet. Being quiet / being active. Both should be possible, without getting stuck in any extreme. Without hangover. Without any split.
