The Feldenkrais Method was developed by the engineer, physicist and martial artist Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-84) as a way of becoming more aware of our movements, of our capacities to sense and perceive - and of ourselves. Throughout our lives from childhood to old age we develop individual sensory-motor habits which define the framework in which we habitually – and mostly unconsciously – act. We take note only when we experience problems, bodily tensions, pain, ongoing stress or a limited capacity to move and live freely. Feldenkrais lessons set out a way to re-wire our movement habits and motion pattern, thereby overcoming musculoskeletattal aches and pains, stress-related disorders, unpleasant sensations, or emotional challenges.
Lessons are taught either through touch and gentle manipulation (also known as "Functional Integration" treatments), or through verbal instruction (also known as "Awareness through movement" lessons).
